Welcome to your Genetics Adviser
The Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) Genetics Adviser point-of-care tool supports clinicians and patients in Australia through the informed consent process for mainstream genetic testing in cancer care.
Patients
If you have been offered or are considering genetic testing for your cancer, learn more about testing and important things to think about here.
Providers
If you are a cancer clinician, find tools and resources here to help you offer genetic testing to your patients.
Mainstream genetic testing in patients with cancer is performed through the patient’s own oncology team during their existing oncology appointments, with support as required from a genetic service.1 This new and updated suite of learning modules is designed to support all members of the oncology team (including surgeons, oncologists, and cancer nurses) to deliver genetic testing to cancer patients. The main module applies across cancer types, with tumour-specific modules available for breast and ovarian cancer.
Educational modules about mainstreaming for clinicians are available at Mainstreaming genetic testing for oncology teams: A focus on genetic testing in cancer patients | eviQ Education
These resources, developed by the joint Clinical Oncology Society of Australia and Human Genetics Society of Australasia Cancer Genetics Special Interest Group (COSA HGSA Cancer Genetics SIG), are an update to the 2019 learning module developed by the Mainstreaming Working Group for the COSA Familial Cancer SIG. This project was supported by funding from Astra Zeneca and development provided by The Med Collective. All content and ownership remain independently with the COSA HGSA Cancer Genetics SIG.
Feedback to the Cancer Genetics SIG is welcomed through the HGSA Secretariat, secretariat@hgsa.org.au or by emailing projectofficer@hgsa.org.au.
